Matthew

Study: Matthew, the author of the gospel, was known as a tax collector before he began following Jesus. The Jews did not hold tax collectors in high regard. They believed that taxes should only go to God and not the state. Most tax collectors were known for being unjust and abusing their powers. Even if Matthew was a honest tax collector, he still would have been hated by most Jews. Despite all of this, Jesus used this tax collector to change the world. Is there someone you despise? That person is loved by God and deserved our love. Do you ever feel like your past keeps you from following God? Matthew didn’t let this stop him and neither did God!

 Prayer: God of the Gospels, thank you for the witness of Matthew. I offer myself up to you. My life is yours to transform. Amen.
