QUICK TO LISTEN, SLOW TO SPEAK

Monday

Read: James 1:19

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, ” (NIV James 1:19)

Study:  Do you ever speak out of anger? I know I do. What James is asking of us in this verse is to go against the initial urge to speak and act. The act of listening is powerful and underused in our society. Sometimes, the best way to reach an understanding with someone you disagree with is to listen to what they have to say. Actively listening to someone’s words will usually make them more willing to listen to what you have to say. Listening breaks through those barriers people often put up. Is there someone you need to listen to?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, slow my tongue and temper my anger.  I pray that you give me a listening ear so that I may be the listening presence for those around me.  Amen.
