LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Tuesday

Read: John 1:6-14

“There was a man sent from God whose name was John.  He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.  Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory , the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (NIV John 1:6-14)

Study: The Bible writers often pictured the tension between good and evil as “light” and “darkness.” The apostle John was able to define what he meant by “light” more specifically. Jesus, he said, was the light who broke into the world’s darkness. As darkness couldn’t put out light, so Jesus could deliver us from the darkness we find within ourselves. Being born is the way each one of us begins our life in the world. John said that the life Jesus brought is so qualitatively new that it’s like being born, this time as a child of God. When did your spiritual journey start? In what ways has trusting and following Jesus given you a whole new life?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for being born, for becoming flesh, so that you could give me the authority and power to be born anew, as a child of God. Thank you for my new life.  Amen.
