Lent Devotion Guide – March 28, 2022
This week we will be talking about the lives of 2 men. Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey. Like the rest of the country, professional baseball was segregated for many years. Branch Rickey was a devout Methodist who believed this segregation and discrimination was not only and injustice, but a sin against God. Therefore, Rickey vowed to do something to rectify this sin. After many years of planning he was able to break the color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson to a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers. For Branch Rickey this was not just a baseball decision, but a decision driven by his faith. 1 Corinthians 16:13 teaches us to, “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” As a result of his decision, Branch Rickey received numerous death threats and criticisms from all over the country. However, his faith compelled him to be courageous in his convictions as he believed Jesus was calling him to do. Sometimes we are all called to live out our faith courageously. Is God calling you to do something courageous?
