ENVY

Introduction: This week we will be focusing on the sin of Envy.  Envy is traditionally listed as one of the “7 deadly sins” because it is a sin that can lead us on a path to many other sins.  This week we will examine envy, and the way in which we might be able to escape its powerful grip. ~ Pastor Adam Ricks

Read: 1 John 3:17

” ¹⁷ If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? ” (NIV 1 John 3:17)

Study: Envy intensifies selfishness and leads to misery.  There have been many scientific studies done over the years to prove what the Bible says about happiness.  Those who live more generous lives, live happier lives.  An envious life is also a selfish life.  When we live with intense envy, we are constantly thinking about ourselves, and how we can get more.  A life focused on self, and self-advancement, is not a life of happiness.  Do you believe to live a life of envy is to live a life of selfishness?  Do you believe that selfishness leads to unhappiness?  How can you focus on generosity instead of envy?

Prayer:  Lord, I do not want to be a person of selfishness.  I do not want to pursue a life of generosity, and the joy that comes with it.  Please help me to be more generous with everything you have given to me. Amen.
