SUFFERING AND SIN
Monday
Read: James 1:2-4
“2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (NIV James 1:2-4)
Study: When James wrote this letter, the Christians, to whom he was writing, were scattered all over the lands. They were forced out of their home and war was on the horizon. While the Romans were persecuting Christians, James encourages his fellow Christians to rely on God in their suffering and not turn to violence. Through perseverance, James says, all of God’s followers will find the strength to grow closer to God despite their suffering. James’ hope and reliance on Christ is impressive considering his circumstances. When you are going through a tough time or when you suffer and face the hardships of life, do you lean on God or on your own understanding? I encourage you to think about these things today. Think about where your joy comes from. Think about how you react to hardships. Give thanks to God for all that you have been blessed with.
Pray: Holy Lord, I give you thanks for the strength you have blessed me with. Be with me through all troubles and hardships. I consider it pure joy to follow you. Amen
