Examine – A 21-Day Wesley Challenge Devotional Guide

Introduction

Examine: A 21-Day Wesley Challenge

Welcome! It is wonderful that you have decided to join the 21-day Wesley Challenge. This challenge will walk you through a 3-week journey of self-examination. The questions you will ask yourself for the next 3 weeks have proven for 300 years to help disciples of Jesus Christ mature in their faith. In 1729, John Wesley was teaching at Oxford when his younger brother Charles Wesley was a student there. Charles, along with a few of his friends, had a simple but powerful question: How do we truly grow in our faith? The students turned to John, an already ordained pastor in the Church of England, for guidance. In response, John helped them form a small group that became known as the “Holy Club.” Together, they committed to a life of intentional spiritual growth, and at the heart of their gatherings were 21 searching questions designed to help them examine their lives honestly before God. For the next 3 weeks you will have a change to ask yourself those same questions.

Week one of this journey focuses on Relationship with God: An Upward Focus. During this week, we will turn our attention toward our connection with God—our prayer life, our devotion, and our attentiveness to His presence. These questions are meant to help us reflect on whether we are truly seeking God first, or simply fitting Him into the margins of our lives. As we begin here, we are reminded that everything in the Christian life flows out of a strong and growing relationship with God.

Week two shifts to Relationship with Self: An Inward Focus. This is where we begin to look honestly at our inner lives—our attitudes, habits, and personal disciplines. These questions invite us to examine areas like pride, self-control, integrity, and consistency. While this kind of reflection can be challenging, it is also where real transformation begins. When we allow God to work within us, He begins to shape us into the people He created us to be.

Week three moves outward into Relationship with Others: An Outward Focus. Here, we consider how our faith is expressed in the way we treat those around us. These questions challenge us to reflect on our words, our relationships, and our witness. Are we loving others well? Are we honest, trustworthy, and gracious? Are we sharing our faith with courage and compassion? This final week reminds us that a healthy relationship with God will always overflow into how we live with others. As you move through this 21-day journey, commit to showing up each day with consistency and openness. Spiritual growth does not happen by accident—it happens through intentional, daily faithfulness. Most importantly, approach these questions with honesty. The goal is not perfection, but transformation. True spiritual health begins when we are willing to see ourselves clearly and invite God to shape us deeply.

A printed 21-day challenge devotional guide will be available for all who wish to participate. The daily devotional will also be posted online each morning on our website (under “blog”) as well as through links below.
