Daily Devotional – Day 8 Wesley Challenge
Day 8: Am I Proud?
Scripture:
James 4:6
Daily Challenge:
Today, intentionally put someone else first in a way that costs you something—time, comfort, or recognition.
Teaching:
We all have the propensity to think of ourselves as the star of the story. It makes sense in some ways, after all our actions and thoughts are the only ones we can control, and try to steer in the right direction. But thinking of ourselves without the benefit of intentional spiritual discipline can devolve into the sin of pride. Pride is one of the most subtle and dangerous spiritual obstacles because it often hides in plain sight. It can show up as arrogance, but it can also appear as self-reliance, defensiveness, or the need to be right. Pride convinces us that we don’t need God or others, and it keeps us from growing. Scripture tells us that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Pride can be an obstacle that prevents us from embracing the grace and wisdom of Jesus. Humility, on the other hand, opens us up to transformation. Being humble doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself—it means thinking of yourself less. It is recognizing that everything we have is a gift from God, and that we still have a lot to learn. When we release pride, we become teachable, open, and free. Today is an opportunity to choose humility in both big and small ways.
Reflection Questions:
- Where does pride tend to show up in my life?
- Do I struggle more with needing recognition or needing control?
- Where should I be practicing more humility?
Prayer:
God, reveal any pride in my heart. Help me to walk in humility and dependence on You. Teach me to value others above myself. Remove any desire for recognition or control. Fill me with Your grace.
