Daily Devotional – Day 16 Wesley Challenge

Day 16: Am I Creating a False Impression? (Am I a Hypocrite?)

Scripture:
Matthew 23:27–28

Daily Challenge:
Be honest in one area today where you are usually tempted to appear better than you are.

Teaching:
We have a weird says in our culture, “fake it till you make it.” While this saying is probably meant to encourage those who are struggling, it can also be a dangerous piece of advice if taken literally. We would not ‘fake’ knowing how to operate a vehicle safely and jump behind the wheel of a car. We would not ‘fake’ knowing how to swim and jump off a boat in the middle of the lake. Both of those things would be dangerous and foolish. It is also foolish to pretend we have wisdom that we do not have or have conquered temptations we have not overcome. Faking it can prevent us from learning it. Hypocrisy is not about failing—it is about pretending. It is presenting a version of ourselves that is more polished, more spiritual, or more put together than reality. Jesus spoke strongly against hypocrisy because it blocks true transformation. When we pretend, we avoid the very honesty that leads to growth. God is not asking for immediate perfection; He is asking for authenticity. Real faith is not about impressing others—it is about becoming more like Christ. When we live honestly, we create space for God to work in our lives. Authenticity invites healing, while pretending hides what needs to be changed. Today, we are invited to live without masks. God already knows the truth—and He loves us fully.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Where am I tempted to present a false version of myself?
  2. What am I afraid would happen if I were fully honest?
  3. How can I practice authenticity today?

Prayer:
Lord, help me to live honestly before You and others. Remove any desire to impress or pretend. Give me the courage to be authentic. Heal the areas of my life that I try to hide. Make me more like You.
