Daily Devotional – Day 14 Wesley Challenge

Day 14: Am I Self-Conscious, Self-Pitying, or Self-Justifying?

Scripture:
2 Corinthians 5:17

Daily Challenge:
When you catch yourself focusing inward today, redirect your focus to God or others.

Teaching:
It is easy to become overly focused on ourselves. Self-consciousness causes us to worry about how others see us. Self-pity leads us to dwell on our struggles and hardships. Self-justification keeps us from taking responsibility for our actions. All of these pull our attention inward and keep us from living in freedom. But in Christ, we are made new. Our identity is no longer rooted in insecurity, hardship, or defensiveness—it is rooted in him. We become the hands and feet of Jesus to make the world a place where light shines. When we shift our focus from ourselves to God and others, we experience greater peace and purpose. This doesn’t mean ignoring our struggles, but it does mean not being controlled by them. Freedom comes when we release the need to constantly look inward. Today, lift your eyes.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which of these do I struggle with most: self-consciousness, self-pity, or self-justification?
  2. How does focusing on myself affect my relationship with God and others?
  3. What helps me shift my focus outward?

Prayer:
God, free me from unhealthy focus on myself. Help me to find my identity in You. Give me confidence, humility, and peace. Teach me to focus on loving You and others. Lead me into true freedom.
