Daily Devotional Guide – December 19
We Embrace God’s Greatness When We Stop Trying to Earn His Love
Teaching:
Many of us struggle to fully embrace how amazing God is because we get caught in the trap of trying to earn His approval or do it all alone. But God’s love has never depended on our performance—it flows from His heart, not our effort. When Mary traveled to Elizabeth, she wasn’t trying to impress God; she was simply responding to God’s call with a willing heart. Elizabeth immediately affirmed that Mary was blessed not because of her perfection, but because of her belief. God does not ask us to do His part—He simply asks us to trust Him with ours. We can serve, obey, and walk faithfully, but the power behind everything is God’s love and God’s work. When waiting turns to wonder, we see just how unnecessary—and exhausting—our striving really is. Trying to earn God’s love leaves us burdened, but receiving his love fills us with peace. God wants us to stop laboring under the pressure of perfection and rest in the reality of grace. Mary’s story teaches us that God works through ordinary, imperfect people who simply make themselves available. When we stop trying to prove ourselves, we can finally appreciate the greatness of God’s mercy and goodness. God’s love is not a reward to achieve; it is a gift to embrace. Surrendering our striving allows us to experience wonder as we watch God do what only He can do.
Recommended Scripture Reading: Titus 3:4–7
Prayer:
Lord, help me stop trying to earn what You freely give. Teach me to rest in Your love instead of striving for approval. Remind me that You are at work even when I feel unworthy. Fill my heart with gratitude for Your grace and kindness. Help me trust you to do Your part as I faithfully do mine.
Questions for Meditation:
1. Where am I trying to earn God’s love instead of receiving it?
2. How does accepting God’s love change the way I see myself?
3. What burden of striving do I need to surrender to God today?
