Discernment in Listening
Teaching:
Proverbs 26:22 says, “The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts.”
This verse warns us that not all words are worth listening to. Listening is important, but Christians must be careful about the voices they allow into their hearts. This proverb warns us about the dangers of gossip. Gossip may sound sweet or interesting, but it is dangerous because it plants seeds of division, suspicion, and sin. If we listen to gossip, we may believe lies or judge people unfairly. God calls us to discernment—to test whether the words we hear are true, loving, and wise. Just as we wouldn’t eat spoiled food, we shouldn’t feed our hearts with spoiled words. While words of gossip are dangerous there are also other dangerous words like hatred or lies that we are constantly exposed to. Listening requires not only open ears but also wise filters. We must ask, “Does this word honor God? Does it build up or tear down? Does it bring truth or spread harm?” If the answer is no, then we must turn away. Discernment helps us avoid being influenced by negative or destructive voices. As Christians, we are called to listen to God’s Word above all, for His truth always gives life. Wise listening means choosing carefully what voices we allow to shape us.
Meditation Questions:
- How do I respond when I hear gossip or harmful words?
- What can I do to guard my heart against negative voices?
- How can I make sure I am listening to God’s truth above all else?
Prayer:
Father, help me to use discernment in what I listen to. Guard my heart against gossip, lies, and destructive words. Teach me to filter every word through Your truth. Give me wisdom to recognize voices that do not honor You. May my listening always lead me closer to Your will.
