Humility in Listening

Teaching:
Proverbs 26:12 says, “Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them.” Proverbs 11:2 adds, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”

Together, these verses show us that humility is essential to listening. Pride makes us think we already know it all, while humility keeps us open to learning. Without humility, we cannot truly listen because we assume others have nothing to teach us. Listening requires us to admit that we don’t have all the answers. God honors the humble heart because it is teachable. A proud person refuses correction, ignores advice, and trusts only their own opinion. This attitude leads to disgrace and failure. But a humble listener gains wisdom because they are willing to learn from God and others. Humility is not weakness—it is strength under control, willing to bow before God’s truth. Every time we choose humility, we open ourselves to growth, guidance, and blessing. Listening and humility walk hand in hand, and without humility, true listening is impossible. God wants His people to live in wisdom, and humility is the gateway to that wisdom.

Meditation Questions:

  1. Do I sometimes act “wise in my own eyes”?
  2. How does pride keep me from listening well?
  3. What steps can I take to practice humility in my daily life?

Prayer:
Lord, teach me to walk in humility. Remove pride from my heart that keeps me from listening. Help me value wisdom over being right. Give me a teachable spirit that is willing to learn from You and others. May my humility bring glory to Your name.
