Daily Devotional Guide – Sept 24th
Listening to Hard Truths
Teaching:
Proverbs 27:6 says, “Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.”
This proverb teaches us that sometimes the most loving thing a friend can do is tell us a hard truth. True friends care more about us more than our comfort. They are willing to risk hurting our feelings to help us hear vital truths. A true friend will deliver hard truths with as much gentleness as possible, but even so, listening to hard truths can feel painful. Someone who doesn’t really care about us will often just say what we want to hear because it is easier. Most people don’t want to hear hard or uncomfortable things and will often reject the words or become angry. A wise person, on the other hand, listens when a godly friend lovingly speaks the truth, even if it stings. The wound of truth is always better than the comfort of lies. Listening to hard truths helps us stay on the right path. It also helps us recognize the value of relationships that are built on honesty. Sometimes God uses others to point out blind spots we cannot see in ourselves. If we ignore these words, we risk walking with ignorance into something much more painful than hearing a hard truth. But if we listen, we can grow stronger, wiser, and closer to God. Godly friendship and wise counsel are His tools to shape us into better followers of Christ.
Meditation Questions:
- Can I think of a time when someone’s hard words helped me grow?
- Do I value friends who tell me the truth, even when it hurts?
- How can I be open to listening when the truth is uncomfortable?
Prayer:
Father, thank You for placing godly friends in my life who speak truth to me. Help me not to reject hard words that are meant to help me grow. Give me humility to listen when I would rather ignore correction. Teach me to value honesty more than comfort. Use the truth spoken by others to draw me closer to You.
