The Value of Correction
Teaching:
Proverbs 12:1 says, “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.”
This is strong language, but it shows how serious God is about correction. Wise people are open to correction because they know it leads to growth. Correction doesn’t always feel pleasant at first, but it keeps us from bigger mistakes later. A child who ignores a parent’s correction may get hurt, while one who listens is protected. In the same way, God uses correction from His Word and from others to protect us spiritually and emotionally. Sometimes correction humbles us, but humility is the soil where wisdom grows. Foolish people refuse correction because they believe they are always right, but that leads only to trouble. Since nobody is without mistake, we all need accountability from time to time. Listening to correction helps us mature and become more Christlike. Obviously, not all criticism is helpful and Godly correction. We must measure the things we hear against the teachings of Jeus. However, just as athletes welcome a coach’s feedback to improve, Christians must welcome correction to grow in holiness. When we reject correction, we choose pride, which always leads to downfall. Godly correction is not a ticket for a guilt trip, but an opportunity to help us grow. Each of us must choose to be mindful and receptive when we are appropriately held accountable.
Meditation Questions:
- How do I normally respond when someone corrects me?
- What can I do to develop a more teachable heart?
- How can I remind myself that correction is a gift from God?
Prayer
Lord, help me to have a heart that welcomes correction. Remove pride that makes me resist discipline and advice. Teach me to see correction as a gift, not an insult. Help me grow in wisdom by learning from the words of others. May I become more like You through my willingness to listen.
