The Wisdom of Listening to Others
Teaching:
Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”
This verse reminds us that listening to others is not a weakness but a strength. Sometimes we think we already know what is best, but God teaches us that wise people are humble enough to close our mouths and open our ears. When we seek counsel from godly friends, parents, mentors, or leaders, we open ourselves to wisdom that we may not have on our own. Listening helps us avoid mistakes that pride and stubbornness might lead us into. God designed us to live in community, which means we were never meant to figure out everything alone. Even the most successful people have coaches, teachers, or counselors who guide them. When we listen, we honor others by valuing their voice and perspective. Of course, not every piece of advice will be perfect, but with prayer and discernment, God helps us sort through what is good. Listening to others also makes us more teachable, which keeps our hearts soft to God’s direction. Listening requires humility, patience, and a willingness to admit we don’t know everything. When we do, God blesses us with wisdom and direction that we could not have found on our own.
Meditation Questions:
- Who are some godly people in my life that I need to listen to more often?
- How has ignoring advice caused me difficulty in the past?
- What steps can I take this week to be more open to wise counsel?
Prayer:
Father, thank You for teaching me that wisdom comes through listening. Help me to value the voices of godly people You have placed in my life. Keep me from pride that makes me think I do not need counsel. Give me a humble heart that seeks wisdom and understands that I don’t know it all. May my listening honor You and lead me in the right direction.
